Do you know how close manufacturers of portable computers strive to hit "standard" dimensions? (Not at all, is the correct answer to the latter question.) Oh, wait a minute, the side panels only violate this patent if they are made from mousepad padding. Got it. Don't use mouse pad padding except in maybe the top or bottom panel where it will be large enough to be useful---assuming you carry and use a mouse with your portable. And don't forget to omit the plurality of pedestals mounted on the base panel. That way for certain you won't infringe this patent. Might the inventor be able to make and profitably sell this invention? Of course, but there's only one claim that counts in this patent and it is very easy to "get around" by simply sticking with the (voluminous) prior art.
